That motivated by hate thing is definitely tricky. Marge Piercy warns about never modeling characters after people you dislike or want to get even with. She says they seldom work.

I feel like at times (particularly in the last four weeks) I am attacked by an a-muse…(a being the Latin prefix against…just FYI though you probably know that and I am insulting your intelligence…sorry). I just want to sit around and not think, not ponder, not reflect. Amusement…that’s what I want…entertainment that turns the brain off. Grr…but…must…write…

Cheryl….STOP WRITING!!! I CAN’T KEEP UP!!! Jussssttt kidding…I like reading your posts…but I have to say, if you create characters driven by hate, don’t let that seep over into your writing group. We only want happy Cheryl (unless your anger is directed away from us).

Yeah, that whole business of thinking about hate as something akin to love (in the sense that both are passion-driven) is still a little new to me too, but in a new way. While hate may not always be admirable (unless its object is appropriate, maybe), it’s at least INTERESTING, and as such, it makes sense to make it part of a character’s motivations. Write something awesome about hate and let us read it!

Great observation about five as the starting place for community–and one I’ve never considered. Geometrically it’s a balanced number, but socially there’s plenty of variety to keep a multiplicity of tensions in motion, and no way to pair off evenly and stagnate. Cool.

Thanks for that post. I have been feeling some frustration lately over whose advice to follow, whether it be an author, a classmate, a friend, etc. etc. It is very true that we get different advice at times. I think you’re right though…when there are two contradictory points of view, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I believe in balance…and I think that translates into a lot of writing advice too.

P.S. I have been looking over those magazines. They seem interesting. I especially liked your article. Writing and climbing…good analogy.
